As Illinois casinos remain ordered closed, Gov. JB Pritzkerextended the executive order to allow the online registration of sports betting accounts until Jan. 9.

The state experienced its “deadliest” week since the COVID-19 pandemic began, with 1,079 deaths reported, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Dec. 1, 2020

All Illinois casinos have been closed since Nov. 20, and that won’t change any time soon, according to Gov. JB Pritzker.

On Dec. 1, Pritzker said that Tier 3 mitigations will last for at least “the next few weeks.” The state is bracing for a COVID-19 surge following the Thanksgiving holiday.

Illinois is still experiencing record hospitalizations, even though its positivity rate is starting to tick downward.

Nov. 20, 2020

All Illinois casinos closed on Friday, Nov. 20, per Pritzker’s orders.

The closure also affects Hawthorne Race Course and its PointsBet retail sportsbook locations.

The PointsBet Sportsbook @ClubHawthorne is temporarily closed due to local restrictions.

The move comes as Illinois imposes new Tier 3 resurgence mitigations. Indoor venues such as retail stores and fitness centers must reduce capacity to 25%, while casinos and indoor dining must shut down entirely.

Per the state of Illinois’ website, “This new tier aims to limit gatherings and encourages people to stay home to the greatest extent possible, while permitting some industries to remain open at significantly reduced capacities with proper safety measures in place.”

There is no firm reopening date for casinos at this time. That will depend on Illinois’ COVID-19 numbers in the coming weeks and months.

See below for the latest updates on each casino.

Nov. 17, 2020

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker will shut down casinos and video gaming terminals (VGTs) effective midnight on Friday, Nov. 20, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The move comes as Illinois is in the midst of arguably its worst COVID-19 stretch to date. Along with gaming facilities, the governor is closing movie theaters, indoor recreational facilities and reducing capacity at retail centers during the busiest shopping season of the year.

During Pritzker’s press conference on Tuesday, he didn’t indicate when reopening would be possible.

Casinos had previously reopened in July after being closed since March. Most have operated at 50% capacity and limited hours since, though certain hot zone regions have only been operating at 25% capacity.

Currently, all Illinois casinos are only allowed 25% capacity. But they will close completely at the end of this week. Pritzker also green-lit video gaming resumption in July, but the state’s tens of thousands of terminals will close once again on Friday.

While the move isn’t shocking, it’s another blow to an already reeling retail gaming industry.

So, what’s the deal with casinos right now? Return here for the latest updates on Illinois casinos and sportsbooks. Here’s what we know.

Cliff notes on casino restrictions

If and when casinos reopen, here’s a quick guide on the health and safety language you’ll see at Illinois casinos and what it means:

  • What does “capacity limit” mean? For a business to have space to ensure six feet of social distance between every customer, the business must limit the number of people who can be inside at one time.
  • What is PPE? It stands for personal protective equipment, which includes face masks, shields and gloves.
  • What is COVID-19 training? It’s an educational program that teaches proper hand washing, cleaning and sanitizing techniques and properly utilizing PPE.

The poker room at Rivers Pittsburgh

The Rivers Poker Room is currently closed. When PA casinos reopened, poker rooms were not permitted to operate due to players handling cards and chips. The plan at that time was to continually monitor the situation and adjust things according to guidance from the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

PGCB Director of Communications Doug Harbach gave this update to PlayPennsylvania last week about poker rooms in Pennsylvania:

“There has been no alteration to the casino reopening protocols released by the Gaming Control Board in May in which poker rooms were not authorized to operate. At the same time, this guideline can be reexamined based on health experts’ guidance. Should casinos wish to explore reopening a casino room, it would need to provide plans to do so safely, which would be reviewed by the board on a case-by-case basis.”

A spokesperson for Rivers Pittsburgh said that plans for reopening poker rooms are yet to be determined.

With increased health and safety protocols come questions about all casinos in Pennsylvania, including Rivers Casino Pittsburgh.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released “COVID-19 Casino Reopening Protocols” that detailed the minimum safety and health-related requirements mandatory before reopening. Of course, casinos can choose to implement additional measures.

When visiting any PA casino, here are some of the new safety guidelines:

  • Casinos can reopen at 50% capacity.
  • Employees and guests must wear masks.
  • There are markings on the floor to promote social distancing.
  • Enhanced cleaning is required throughout the facility.

In early July, the Pennsylvania Department of Health expanded on the business safety order requiring masks to be worn in all public places in addition to inside of businesses.

Nfl Odds Rivers Casino

PGCB Executive Director Kevin O’Toole reached out to all of the state’s casinos about implementing the temporary ban on smoking in casinos. O’Toole determined that in the PGCB protocols, casinos must comply with guidelines from the PA Department of Health, which issued an updated order mandating masks in public.

When it reopened, Rivers started a new initiative, “Rivers Clean,” which represents a rigorous property-wide cleaning and disinfectant program to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

It also upgraded its HVAC system to include airPHX, a technology that continuously disinfects indoor air and eliminates coronavirus on surfaces. In addition, the casino also features AtmosAir, an indoor air quality purification system that is proven to neutralize coronavirus by more than 99.9%.
